Check out the EEOC’s livestream tomorrow on the use of AI in hiring decisions

I’m exhausted.

As much as I prepared for this at the gym over the past several weeks, I must admit that climbing greased telephone polls on Broad Street after the Philadelphia Eagles advanced to the Super Bowl took its toll on my quads.

So, I will enjoy the big win — thanks, Empire State Building, for the shout-out 🤡 — and rest up for the next few days. Part of my R&R will include checking out the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission‘s Virtual Hearing On the Use of Automated Systems in Employment Decisions.

EEOC Commissioner Andrea Lucas and I scratched the surface on this topic when we discussed emerging employment law issues. But this EEOC event promises to be a more fulsome discussion on using automated systems in hiring decisions. Here’s the description:

Join EEOC on January 31, 2023, at 10 a.m. ET for a virtual hearing to examine the use of automated systems, including artificial intelligence (AI), in employment decisions. The hearing continues the work of EEOC’s AI and Algorithmic Fairness Initiative.

Increasingly, automated systems, like AI, are being used to make employment decisions including recruiting, hiring, and firing workers. These technologies, some as simple as automated resume scanners, can encode harmful biases and result in unlawful discrimination.

During the hearing, panelists will discuss the civil rights implications of AI and other automated systems on America’s workers and job seekers. The hearing will also explore ways in which these technologies might support diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) efforts.

I received an email invite to the event. But it’s open to the public. If you would like to attend too, you can register by clicking here.
