Yesterday, I blogged here about New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s conditional veto of a bill which was intended to level the wage gap between men and women performing substantially similar jobs in the Garden State.
Last night, I came across this survey from CareerBuilder, which examined the pay disparity between male and female sole breadwinners.
We may have a pay problem here.
The survey was conducted online and included more than 2,000 employers and 1,002 working parents (593 working mothers and 409 working fathers) with children 18 years old and younger who are living at home with them. The results of the survey indicate that working dads make hella-more than working moms. Of those sole breadwinners surveyed, 69% of working moms earn less than $50,000, while only 40% of working dads earn less than $50,000. The numbers aren’t much better when earning eclipse $50,000. Actually, they’re worse. Twenty percent of the working moms reporting earning more than $50,000 annually. Nearly three times as many working dads (58%) reported earning more than $50,000.
Does this survey confirm that American workplaces have a gender-pay gap? Not necessarily. The survey criteria does not indicate that moms and dads performing the same work were compared against one another.
Will you be proactive or reactive?
Results like these, and new legislation being bandied about, should have you questioning your pay practices. So, rather than kick the can down the road, do something about it proactively. Add it to your 2016 HR-compliance checklist:
- FLSA wage and hour audit
- FMLA audit
- Equal pay audit
